Overview
Department of Physics and Energy Engineering includes a wide variety of disciplines and specializations, ranging from very practical, technology-driven fields to the study of the fundamental laws and structure of the universe. The major fields of study include atomic and molecular physics; optics and lasers; condensed matter; high energy physics; astrophysics and cosmology, photonics engineering, energy engineering, and nuclear engineering.
The Physics and Energy Engineering Department offers a B.Sc. degree in physics and energy engineering; M.Sc. degree in physics, photonics engineering, energy engineering, and nuclear engineering; Ph.D. degree in physics and nuclear engineering.
Alumni play prominent roles in leading industries and governments in Iran.
The physics department of the Amirkabir University of Technology was founded in 1988. The name of the department was changed to “Department of Physics and Energy Engineering” in 2013. This change reflects our new research and teaching directions in the engineering of renewable and sustainable energy systems. This name represents our dedication and response to the world's changing energy needs.

Roadmap
The Faculty of Physics and Energy Engineering has been operating independently since 1988. The doctorate in nuclear engineering in cooperation with the Atomic Energy Organization has been inaugurated in the same year, and this was the first doctoral program in engineering in Iran. This school benefits three groups of physics, nuclear engineering, and energy engineering. The physics branch consists of optics and laser, condensed matter, and theoretical physics. The nuclear engineering group includes radiation applications, medical radiation, reactor, fusion, health physics, and the energy engineering group consists of energy systems and renewable energies (newly established).
The school has two bachelor's degrees in physics and in energy engineering and also accepts the students for three master's degrees in physics, energy engineering, and nuclear engineering, and two doctoral degrees in physics and nuclear engineering. On the other hand, the faculty enjoys the interdisciplinary orientations in photonics and energy engineering whose entrance students are selected from the undergraduate students in electrical and mechanical engineering.
The number of students who presently study here, is more than 750  in three levels of doctorate, master and bachelor and 216 ones have been so far graduated in the doctoral level, 1300 in the master and 900 in the bachelor level.
It is worth mentioning, the faculty and students have so far published 1055 ISI articles, 417 papers in international conferences, and 577 papers in the domestic conferences, as well as 48 domestic inventions and 14 international patents, have been registered since its establishment.
Currently, several mega-projects are underway including  “Design and construction of medical cyclotrons”, ”Design and construction of Tokamak”, “ Oil well extraction scale-up by plasma pulse method”, “Biological assay based on laser spectroscopy”, “Optimization of solar panels” and “Quantum cryptography”.
The academic exchange with several international universities and foreign institutes are currently performed including South Korea (Skku) University, the University of Waterloo in Canada, the University of Freiburg in Germany, the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom, and the University of Alberta in Canada.
We plan to enhance our academic and infrastructural activities including the establishment of an innovation center for physics and energy engineering, equipping specialized laboratories with modern analysis instruments, and upgrading the service laboratories.
